The whole point of an all-inclusive resort is that everything… food, drinks, lodging and certain amenities/activities … is included in the price … right? Well, mostly right. Although the term all-inclusive does vary somewhat from resort to resort, it usually includes lodging, meals and drinks. But what about tips?
The marketing literature for most all-inclusive will say that the price includes tips. As this may be technically true, many who stay at these resorts actually do include tipping as part of their vacation budget. Its a great way to show respect to those serving you and to reward and/or encourage exceptional service during your stay. It may not be expected but it will absolutely be greatly appreciated. Tips can be done using Mexican pesos or US dollars.
Here’s a general guideline/suggestion (not a rule) for tipping at the resort.
- housekeeper $2 – $3 a day (not the same housekeeper everyday);
- also leave $2 every other day in the mini-bar fridge for the guy/girl who restocks it for you. This is not the same person as the maid.
- Bartender (including beach/pool service); depends on how much you drink… but good to give him/her $3 – $5 every other round or so. Some people like to give the bartender $20 at the beginning of their stay and then add to that periodically.
- Busser at Buffet – leave $2 or $3 a meal.
- Waiter at Specialty Restaurants at Resort – $4 – $7 a meal.
- Off-Resort Restaurants – tip 10% – 15%
- Bell Boy who handles your luggage to and from your room – $1 per bag.
- Private Shuttle/Tour drive – 10% of the cost of the trip.
Nothing says that you have tip at the all-inclusive resorts, but a little extra generosity will go a long way to making your vacation special.
